Prologue: SCENE I. The Woman without a Heart A garret. Elegant, but old, worn furniture. A piano in a corner. PAULINE: (entering, carrying linen which she places in a drawer in the chest of drawers) If he knew that I stayed up all night to darn and mend his wardrobe, he?d get upset. But Bah! A scientist, always distracted. He never notices a thing. It?s a pleasure to serve him. And then, don?t I owe him gratitude? Didn?t he teach me music, design, grammar in the end all that I know? Thanks to him, I will soon be in a condition to give lessons in my turn. Then we will have a servant and my poor mother will no longer be alone taking care of this hotel, when she?s dying of fatigue. (looking out the window) How the rain is falling! The sky is set for the whole day. Where can he be in such weather? Ah, at the home of that woman, doubtless, at the home of the Countess that his friend Mr. Rastignac introduced him to. A coquette, a great rich lady and proud, who will, after having driven him crazy, cause him to die of despair! Oh! That woman! I hate her! She?s really lucky, she is! (drying a tear) What am I thinking about? My God this rain worries me. He?s going to come back soaked to the bone, trembling with fever for he?s too economical to take a carriage. (smiling sadly) Economical! Poor boy, and no fire in the month of December. (cupping her ear) I hear a noise. It?s him. (examining him) O my God! How pale he is. (Raphael enters without seeing Pauline; coat buttoned, collar turned up. He is agitated and shakes his hat, which streams.)
