Excerpt: One of the most important developments in biostatistics in recent years has been the evolution of regression methods for failure time data. In epidemiology, failure may refer to the diagnosis of a certain disease or to death from the disease. Primary interest typically centers around the relationship between individual characteristics or exposures and subsequent disease incidence or mortality. In a cohort study, a group of subjects is selected from a population of interest and followed forward in time for disease occurrence. Both baseline characteristics or exposures, and characteristics or exposures measured during follow-up, may be of interest as disease risk factors. Such information will be referred to as the subjects covariate history.
