This document is intended to provide guidance to the consumer in accessing and utilizing eleven Multiple Cause of Death Public Use Tape files which are now being prepared for release and will cover deaths occurring in the United States during the period 1968-1978. Each yearly tape file will contain two multiple cause of death fields which have been coded using the Intematioml Classification of Diseases, Adapted for Use in the United States, - Eighth Revision (ICDA-8) and are available for the first time from these tapes. In addition, each tape file will contain all underlying cause, demographic, and geographic detail data originally,released as part of the NCHS micro data tape program (see pages 9, 12, and 13, NCHS StandardizedMicro-DataTape Transcripts,Hyattsville,Maryland June 1978). The documentationprovidesthe technicaldataprocessing informationnecessa to accessthe tapesand the classification structureand codingrulesappliedto createeach variableon the tapessuch that the user can readilyassessrelevanceat varying levelsof detailto his own particularresearch. Additionally,it conveysthe characteristicsof the multiplecausefieldssufficient to guidethe user in analyzingand interpretingmultiplecausedata. The user is alertedto certainpitfallsof interpretation,and the appropriatenessof each type of multiplecausedata to givenapplicationsis discussed.
