Adventure

In fiction, the adventurer figure or Picaro may be regarded as a descendant of the knight-errant of Medieval romance. Like the knight, the adventurer roams through episodic encounters, usually involving wealth, romance, or fighting. Unlike the knight, the adventurer was a realistic figure, often lower class or otherwise impoverished, who is forced to make his way to fortune, often by deceit. Also, an adventurer is a roguish hero of low social class who lives by his or her wits in a corrupt society.

Dieselpunk Epulp Showcase : Volume 1

By: John W. Picha; Grant Gardiner

WELCOME TO THE RETRO FUTURE When I started the Dieselpunks website years ago, the word “dieselpunk” was still a curiosity. Sure, it was loaded with familiar tropes like Pulp Adventure, Film Noir, and Weird Horror, but the artists were mashing these concepts together with something different, something a little more contemporary. At that time, the steampunks were just starting to climb their way from the underground and gain traction as a legitimate style, but there ...

THE 1920s. MID-WESTERN COMMONWEALTH, CHICAGO. “Well if it ain’t that then what was it?” “It was all those damn fool bankers in New York.” “Bankers?” “Yeah, bankers. They’re the ones who caused everything that’s happened. A huge pack of New York bankers got greedy. And the country was the one to cop it in the teeth when it all headed south.” “Nah. It weren’t that.” “It was too. And everyone knows it. Bankers got greedy, they sold Louisiana back to the ...

Karutha Thambratti : Collection of Short Stories

By: Harikumar Edasseri

Human relations interest the author. The intricacies of life, the struggle for existence are all raw material for him. The last story Aa Paattu Nirthu (Stop that Song) is about a 5 year old girl who has an HIV infection, and is being boycotted by the inmates of the flats in the building. A really sad story.

It was her 5th birthday. Waiting at the open door for her friends, who never came, she got tired and fell asleep. When her father came from office she was woken up. He took her in his arms and went to the decorated sitting room, where the birthday cake with her name inscribed on it was kept. The cone shaped caps she had bought for her friends to wear for the party were heaped on a table without any takers. The small carry home packets containing chocolates and balloons f...

The Ugly Lights

By: Steve Gillow

A sequel to "One Song Sets" with stories from The Bunker that don't start and end with either Kitty or the Professor, plus a couple that do.

As for the institution, no dancer will claim Candy as a stage name. At first it was because Mom didn't want the Professor reminded. But every once in a while a new dancer wanted to claim the moniker. The Professor told Mom that it didn't bother him, but she made sure there was nothing Candy-esque about the dancer. Candy #2 was pretty to look at but dumb as a box of rocks. She didn't last a month, aborting a fetus just before pregnancy started to show. Candy #3 w...

One Song Sets

By: Steve Gillow

A novella describing a single evening in a bar and two people who are surprised to find they like each other even though it's obvious to everyone else.

“I know it’s none of my business, but is she serious?” Kitty shrugged, “Just a phase. And too young anyway.” The Professor wore a downtrodden face when he said that if that was the case, every woman in the joint was too young for him. “Not true,” Kitty compared him to fine wine, or better yet whiskey. He had gained subtleties from the barrel and had been gentled by experience. “Ah,” the Professor said. “And Skates?” “Boone's Farm.” They laughed and a...
