Upper Labrador Sea Water in the Irminger Sea During a Weak Convect...

By: P. Morin; S. Bacon; H. Mercier; E. De Boisseson; E. Louarn

Description: Laboratoire de Chimie Marine, Institut Universitaire Européen de la Mer, Plouzané, France. Four cruises between 2002 and 2006 sampled physical and chemical tracers in the southern Irminger Sea during the period of weak convection in the North Atlantic Subpolar Gyre. The upper Labrador Sea Water (uLSW) shows complex and time variable patterns reflecting different formation sites: Irminger Sea, South Greenland and Labrador Sea.

A Nested Circulation Model for the North Aegean Sea : Volume 3, Is...

By: K. Tsiaras; V. Kourafalou

Description: Hellenic Center for Marine Research, Anavyssos, Greece. A multi-nested approach has been employed for numerical simulations in the northern part of the Aegean Sea in the framework of the MFSTEP (Mediterranean Forecast System: Toward Environmental Predictions) project. The high resolution (~1.6 km) hydrodynamic model of the North Aegean Sea (NAS) has been nested within a coarser model of the Eastern Mediterranean (resolution ~3.6 km) which is also nested...

Large-eddy Simulation of Pollutant Dispersion from a Ground-level ...

By: C.-h. Liu; Y. B. Zhao; T. Z. Du

Description: Department of Mechanical Engineering, The University of Hong Kong, Hong Kong, China. In this study, the dispersion of chemically reactive pollutants is calculated by large-eddy simulation (LES) in a neutrally stratified urban canopy layer (UCL) over urban areas. As a pilot attempt, idealized street canyons of unity building-height-to-street-width (aspect) ratio are used. Nitric oxide (NO) is emitted from the ground surface of the first street canyon int...

A Study on Distribution of Chlorophyll-A in the Coastal Waters of ...

By: N. Bin Abu Bakar; S. Jamshidi

Description: School of Physics, Universiti Sains Malaysia, 11800 USM, Penang, Malaysia. Phytoplankton as chlorophyll-containing organisms is the first step of production in most marine processes and food chains. Nutrient enhancement in the seawater due to the discharge of agricultural, industrial, and urban wastes threatens the Caspian Sea environment. Increasing concentrations of chlorophyll-a in seawater, in reaction to the elevation of nutrient supply can ...

Increasing Transports of Volume, Heat, and Salt Towards the Arctic...

By: S. Østerhus; R. Kristiansen; H. Hátún; K. M. H. Larsen; B. Hansen; E. Mortensen

Description: Faroe Marine Research Institute, Tórshavn, Faroe Islands. The flow of warm and saline water from the Atlantic Ocean, across the Greenland–Scotland Ridge, into the Nordic Seas – the Atlantic inflow – is split into three separate branches. The most intensive of these branches is the inflow between Iceland and the Faroe Islands (Faroes), which is focused into the Faroe Current, north of the Faroes. The Atlantic inflow is an integral part of the North ...

By: A. R. Piola; E. D. Palma; R. P. Matano

Description: College of Oceanic and Atmospheric Sciences, Oregon State University, Corvallis, Oregon, USA. The oceanic circulation over the southwestern Atlantic shelf is influenced by large tidal amplitudes, substantial freshwater discharges, high wind speeds and – most importantly – by its proximity to two of the largest western boundary currents of the world ocean: the Brazil and Malvinas currents. This review article aims to discriminate the dynamical processes ...

Near-surface Diurnal Warming Simulations: Validation with High Res...

By: B. Ward; G. A. Wick; B. Scanlon

Description: School of Physics and Ryan Institute, National University of Ireland, Galway, University Road, Galway, Ireland. Sea surface temperature (SST) is an important property for governing the exchange of energy between the ocean and the atmosphere. Common in-situ methods of measuring SST often require a cool-skin and warm-layer adjustment in the presence of diurnal warming effects. A critical requirement for an ocean sub-model is that it can simulate the chang...

Seasonal Variability of Phytoplankton Fluorescence in Relation to ...

By: E. Crisafi; F. Raffa; F. Decembrini; F. Azzaro

Description: Institute for Coastal Marine Environment, CNR, Sp. S. Raineri, 86 – 98122 Messina, Italy. In the Straits of Messina, large gradients of tidal displacements, as well as the topographic constrictions, determine the upwelling of deeper waters in the surface layer. This work describes the seasonal variability in the surface distribution of phytoplankton biomass depending on the upwelling phenomena. Temperature, salinity, nitrates and phytoplankton fluorescen...

Description: Laboratório de Estudos dos Oceanos e Clima, Instituto de Oceanografia, Universidade Federal do Rio Grande (FURG), Rio Grande, RS, 96203-900, Brazil. We analyzed the ability of the Estimating the Circulation and Climate of the Ocean – Phase II (ECCO2) reanalysis to represent the hydrographic properties and variability of Antarctic Bottom Water (AABW) in the Southern Ocean. We used a 20-year (1992–2011) observational database to perform comparisons of hydr...
